MANY have lost hope of the Federal Government showing a maintained interest in the return of peace to the South East. The indications are that the centre at best is disinterested in whether the South East swims or sinks. It is not true.

There is hardly anyone who does not aspire to add value to their life. Everyone wants to make progress. Everyone wants a better life. That was the expectation of Nigerians, especially the suffering masses, when President Bola Ahmed Tinubu assumed office on May 29th last year.

ALLEGATIONS IN SEARCH OF EVIDENCE: It was on a cool Friday mid morning on June 9, 2023, one year ago. It was an airport tarmac scene. Social media suddenly became awash with photos of then CBN governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, alighting from a white Hilux truck and being harnessed into a waiting jet. The scenario could be likened to an abduction scene as the men in the picture were unmistakably of the secret service. Apart from their dress code, handcuffs were evident as they boarded the plane.

Nigeria cannot have real development without a sustainable industrial growth and manufacturing capacity which is the solution to poverty, unemployment and insecurity. No doubt having an industrial goods production base and or a competitive industrial economy is the only remedy to Nigeria’s dependence on importation of goods, technologies and services from other nations.

Last week Wednesday, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu marked the second Democracy Day in office. Ordinarily it ought to have been an occasion of great celebration for Tinubu in particular for his pro-democracy credentials and the role he played, known and unknown, to shift Democracy Day from May 29 to June 12. Unfortunately, the occasion was soiled by cries of "we are hungry" all over the place. That is a dent on Tinubu's democratic credentials.

The tin-god democrat: This column can state categorically that President Bola Tinubu is not a democrat. He is a power monger who has climbed on the back of democracy to grab power. For him, democracy is a highway maiden who’s services he procures to sate his appetite.

Scripture says “Where no counsel is, the people fall: But in the multitude of counsellors there is safety” Nigeria is in such dire straits that its affairs can no longer be left solely to those in the corridors of power. Either they are short of ideas or the problem is just beyond them. I do not want to believe we have found ourselves, again, in the same bind that made one-time military dictator, Ibrahim Babangida, to exclaim that Nigeria’s economy defies solution.

Despite founding Nigeria’s most successful hydrocarbon geophysical consulting firm and contributing significantly to the development of the oil and gas sector, Boniface Madubunyi, who died at 90 on May 13th in London, was practically unknown to the Nigerian public. That’s the way he wanted it. Very few persons anywhere can be so successful and yet so self-effacing, almost monastic in their lifestyle.

There is always a window of economic opportunity in any situation - whether good, bad or ugly. On the other hand, real economic solutions don't happen on their own but are products of strategic thinking and planning.

Last week, I published here the first part of “One year later, what value has Tinubu added to our lives?” with a promise to publish part two here today. In the midst of that came a critical dimension to the lingering strike by Labour. With Labour still flexing muscles and the Government appearing reluctant to play ball; another nationwide strike looms. What the nation experienced the last time, especially with the shutting down of the national grid by the striking workers, must be avoided at all costs because the costs were staggering.
