We have been told that as we approach the end-time, there is nothing we shall not see or hear! All things become possible. Yinka Aiyefele told us in one of his songs that Ifa now shouts Alleluia (Ifa n ke alleluya). Now, in the ensuing melee over the appointment of a new Alafin of Oyo, we have witnessed allegations of bribery and corruption fly in all directions, Ifa’s sacred groves inclusive. If gold rusts, what will iron do?

Yesterday, as I sat behind the microphone at Radio Nigeria Voice FM Nsukka during the “Voice Connect” live program, I had a rare privilege to engage directly with the people of Udenu Local Government Area and the wider public. The topic? Chairman Aka Eze Aka’s first 100 days in office. The response from callers was both heartwarming and illuminating, painting a picture of a leader who has not only won the trust of his people but has also begun to etch his name in the annals of good governance.

On the eve of Donald Trump’s inauguration as the 45th President of the U.S., on January 19, 2017, I wrote an article I could easily write now. It was entitled “A Memory of America on Obama’s Last Day.” With minor edits, it’s worth repeating as Trump happens again as the 47th President of the U.S.

It would be a fraud to call the annual report that the Auditor-General of the Federation submits to the National Assembly a fraud - it is by far something worse. The truth is that the report is rooted in long established practice of doing nothing about fraud because as a Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee of the Senate once said, “these are mere allegations and need to be proved”.

Comrade (Dr.) Segun Osoba - remember him? He celebrated his 90th birthday last week Thursday at his country home of Ijebu-Ode, Ogun state. Family, friends, comrades and students of the Marxist ideologue gathered to give him 90 hearty cheers. Comrade, as we fondly called him, was a Senior Lecturer in the Department of History at the then University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), aka Great Ife.

When I asked the rhetorical question: “Are Yoruba the ‘problem’ with Nigeria?”, more responders answered “No” than “Yes”. Many said Nigeria, indeed, was - and still is - the problem with the Yoruba - a cog in the wheel of its progress! I think it is necessary to locate (who are) the real problems with Nigeria because, as they say, a problem once realised is a problem half-solved.

A river that forgets its source will surely dry up. Today, January 12, 2025, marks two months since His Excellency, Senator Monday Okpebholo, assumed office as the Governor of Edo State. In this short span, Governor Okpebholo has demonstrated his commitment to restoring peace and harmony in the state, healing the divisive wounds inflicted by his predecessor, Godwin Obaseki.

As I set out to pen this piece on this serene Sunday afternoon, my mind is drawn to the profound epistle of Apostle Paul to the Corinthians in 1 Corinthians 1:27-29: "But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; and base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: That no flesh should glory in his presence."

In a bold move to tackle corruption and ensure accountability, Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has taken decisive action against the 18 Local Government Area (LGA) chairmen accused of mismanaging resources. The governor's intervention has been widely commended by well-meaning Nigerians, who see this as a step in the right direction towards transparency and good governance.

In 1984 there was a universal review of the dystopian novel Nineteen Eight- Four, sometimes written and published as 1984, written by George Orwell. More known for his satirical book Animal Farm, George Orwell is a pen name adopted by Eric Arthur Blair, an English novelist, poet, essayist, journalist and critic. According to Wikipedia, “his work is characterised by lucid prose, social criticism, opposition to all totalitarianism, and support of democratic socialism.”

As the golden rays of his 60th birthday dawned, Mele Kolo Kyari is standing tall on a constellation of stellar achievements. He hit the Biblical three scores on a bull’s eye with news of long dead, abiku refineries becoming ‘born again’.
