Former Governor of Niger state, Dr. Mu'azu Babangida Aliyu has made a case for adequate female representation in governance to provide enabling environment for women to contribute their quota to the growth and development of Nigeria.
The former Governor made the declaration at the Democracy Day Anniversary Lecture/Award Presentation organized by the Niger state chapter of the, Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC).
Former Governor Aliyu represented by Alhaji Hamisuusa Jankaro, told guests at Haske Luxury, venue for the event that Nigerian women have proved their worth in handling different assignments given to them hence should be accorded desired attention to handle responsibilities placed upon them.
Congratulated IPAC and Nigerians on the occasion of Democracy Day, Aliyu described June 12th as defining moment in the nation's democratic history and a reminder of collective responsibilities to protect democratic values by every citizen.
The foundation of every enduring democracy, he argued is the rule of law, stressing that democratic institutions must operate strictly within provisions of the Nigerian constitution and established legal frameworks.
"Without the rule of law, democracy cannot thrive, the strength and credibility of every democratic governance depend on the respect for constitutional provisions and judicial pronouncements by all institutions of government."
For the election to be generally acceptable, former Governor Aliyu challenged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to remain impartial and consistent in its dealings with judicial decisions, noting that on no account should the electoral body be perceived as selective in obeying court judgments.
For adequate gender balance in governance, Mu'azu Babangida Aliyu encouraged IPAC and all the registered political parties in Nigeria to champion greater participation of women in politics and governance.
Aliyu made case for the allocation of at least 30 percent of elective and appointive positions to women, describing their inclusion as not only vital to democratic development and social progress, but national stability.
The event with the theme: "Strengthening Democratic Governance in Nigeria: The Role of Political Parties in Building Public Trust", also featured presentation of awards to distinguished Nigerians in recognition of their outstanding contributions to democracy, public service, and n
ation building. NNL.
