Eight journalists have been cleared to contest various positions in the 2026 election of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Bauchi State Council.
The election is scheduled to hold on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, with voting expected to commence at 10:00 a.m. and close at 1:00 p.m.
The Credentials/Electoral Committee said two other aspirants were not cleared after failing to meet specific constitutional requirements.
Those cleared include Mohammed Kawu of New Nigeria Newspaper (NNN), who is contesting for Vice Chairman; Samuel Luka of Daily Times and Rauf Oyewole of The Guardian, both contesting for Chairman.
Others are Adamu Shehu Imam of Trust Television and Ayinde Abdulsaheed Olaide of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), who are both seeking the position of Treasurer.
Mohammed Nasir Shuaibu of New Telegraph and Armstrong Bakam of Arise were cleared to contest for Secretary, while David Adenuga of The Nation was cleared for Auditor.
According to the committee, all eight aspirants met the stipulated requirements, including educational qualifications, payment of practising fees, submission of curriculum vitae and sponsorship by eligible chapel members.
However, Ayuba Maffi Ajiya of BusinessDay was not cleared to contest for Financial Secretary after the committee determined that he did not meet the minimum years of practice required under Article 6 (7) (a) of the NUJ Constitution.
Suzan Edeh of Daily Independent, who is seeking the position of Vice Chairman, was also not cleared for failing to meet the educational requirement under Article 3 (2) (b).
The final voters’ list contains 37 eligible members drawn from various media organisations, including NAN, Daily Trust, The Guardian, Channels Television, Reuters, Leadership, Arise, ThisDay, The Sun, Punch, Vanguard and New Telegraph.
The election and subsequent swearing-in of elected officials will be supervised by officials of the NUJ Bauchi State Council.
The Election Committee urged all eligible members to participate in the exercise. NNL.
