It is a puzzle that the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration has dragged the 36 state governments to court to compel them to respect the autonomy of the 774 local governments, often touted, though erroneously, as the third tier of government and the government that is closest to the grassroots. That Tinubu has seemingly chosen the path of strengthening the existing Nigerian political structure or system contrary to the avalanche of cries for restructuring will baffle many.

But for the ministerial presentations on the achievements of the President Bola Tinubu administration in its first year, christened Ministerial Sectoral Update, which began on Tuesday May 21 at the National Press Centre in Abuja, many may not have known or appreciated the quantum of work that has been done by the government within such a short period of one year in office.

Last week here in this column (TREASURES column, published in the New Telegraph newspaper of Wednesday, 22 May, 2024), we warned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to beware because Ondo State people were unhappy with the measly offering he offered them as per his Board appointments. The state and its people, who supported the president handsomely in the February 25, 2023 presidential election, got one of the least number of appointments - 6 out of the 550 positions on offer. As if adding salt to injury, states that contributed far less to Tinubu’s presidential victory got greater compensation than Ondo State and its people.
