Contemplate this: I am someone born in Kaduna just after Nigeria was born, cut my teeth in the undulating plains of Fika, ran around on the cloud-caressing plateaux of Gembu where I started my primary education but was raised in the serene, motherly town of Maiduguri, even though I was told my ancestors came from Yemen, the pride of all freedom fighters who love justice and fairness.

Numbers carry enormous power. They clothe themselves with infallible authority, convincing the public that they reveal cold, hard truth. Yet statistics are never innocent. In the hands of unclean minds they can be manipulated so crudely to serve selfishly, even to the level of destroying beyond redemption whatever they tag. History is filled with shady characters and agencies that have done that. Somehow, they always eventually, fail in the ignoble beat. Nigerians may have just witnessed an example of such an ill-purposed misadventure.

The Olunloyo family of Ibadan needs no elaborate introduction. Who does not know Dr. Victor Omololu Sowemimo Olunloyo: For his brilliance, especially his globally established wizardry in Mathematics; his eccentrism, his wits, his humour, his politics, and his many controversies? His disciplinarian streak is another side of his I got to know when I spoke with a family member. And, of course, social media buffs will also be familiar with his daughter, Kemi; perhaps, no less controversial (even eccentric, to some)!

I have been under the weather for the past six weeks - a period during which I have not gone to my office. Though being visible almost always online may suggest otherwise, I do mean it in the literal sense. And ironically, what dipped me under the weather is the weather itself. There was a period when Abuja went rainless for about two weeks. Of course, it became a serious issue of concern to many, especially farmers and students of climate change.

Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, is hardly in the news. Lawal has enough on his plate in a region struggling with banditry and insurgency, and in a state whose political heavyweights oppose him over political differences.
