“What is the difference between journalists on one hand and broadcasters, presenters, radio and television personalities, news anchors and talk-show hosts on the other?”

You must be familiar with the controversy - indeed, name-calling and abusive tirade - between ARISE TV presenter, Rufai Oseni, and the Senior Special Adviser on Public Communications and Social Media to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, in the person of Olalere (Lere) Olayinka on the issue of who is a journalist and who is not, among other controversies in which the two media personalities are enmeshed. I came across another salvo fired from both sides a few days ago and I began to wonder whether there must not be an end to such mud-slinging that casts a slur on both men, demeans the profession(s) to which they belong, and ridicules the organizations/personalities they represent or speak for. Shorn of its gutter language and the altercations that not only foul the air but also distract attention from the critical issues of media practice, the question of who is a journalist and who is not that has been raised remains germane all the same.

Watching the shameful action of the managing director of SUJIMOTO , Mr Sijibomi Ogundele on video shedding crocodile tears as he narrates his deal in a Tik-tok style, one may conclude that it was just one of those fake video from social media.

The reported move by Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS) to pressure Meta into taking down activist Omoyele Sowore’s Facebook page has sparked outrage among rights advocates. Human rights campaigner Deji Adeyanju condemned the action, describing it as an “unacceptable assault on free speech and democracy.” His remarks highlight a deepening debate in Nigeria: where should the line be drawn between legitimate criticism of leaders and unlawful defamation?

"Does it then mean that the PDP is out of the woods? Not really! Party leaders still have to contend with the problem of how to reintegrate Wike into the party or effectively manage the maverick politician, if I may call it that! How will the party cure him of what many party faithful see as his anti-party activities? Will he still remain in the Bola Ahmed Tinubu/APC administration or will he be expected to quit?"

General Christopher Musa, the Nigerian Chief of Defence Staff, recently urged us to learn combat skills to protect ourselves when faced with danger. He made this point as a guest on Channels Television’s Politics Today. He likened the acquisition of martial arts such as Karate, Taekwondo, and Judo to driving, swimming, and other essential survival skills. He even suggested that, were it not for the fact that the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has been “watered down to three weeks,” the programme should train Nigerian graduates in unarmed combat skills for daily survival against evil men.

When I wrote that the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) is an animal that eats its curator for lunch, it sounded like a stretch. But so far, the tenure of Bayo Ojulari as group chief executive officer is proving it. This might not be obvious if you look solely at Nigeria’s current crude oil sales.
