Rt. Hon. Chief Emeka Anyaoku, one of Nigeria's best and most celebrated ever, entered the hallowed chamber of the eldest living patriarchs as he marked his 90th birthday anniversary on 18th January, 2023. Homebred from Nigeria’s premier University of Ibadan, which by all standards, stands out as a leading centre of learning and incubation of knowledge, Anyaoku is today, one of greatest human minds from the African continent, acclaimed global diplomat, administrator and traditional authority.

The presidential election 2023 may go down in history as one that was most strategically fought among the three leading contestants. I will rely mainly on the results released by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, which is being disputed by the first runner up, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice-President, who ran on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. Even the second runner-up, Mr. Peter Obi of the Labour Party, LP, has gone to court, asserting that he was cheated by both Tinubu and Atiku. He claimed he has enough evidence of his victory to overwhelm the President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and Atiku. This would be the first time in Nigerian history that the second runner-up according to the electoral umpire, believes he actually won.

The 2023 presidential election in Nigeria is not the worst in human history. That dubious reputation belongs in Liberia where, in 1927, the then President Charles D.B. King scored 234,000 votes out of a total of 15,000 registered voters. The victor was also kind enough to give his opponent 9,000 votes as a mark of fairness and justice. That uncommon feat is naturally in the Guinness Book of World Records. We in Nigeria have not reached that enviable height. We will get there one day, soon. But we had a presidential election last Saturday in which the person who was declared winner got voted in by less than 10 percent of the total registered voters and even less than four percent of the nation’s population.
