What 2023 election has revealed to Nigeria politics since Mr. Peter Obi entered the presidential race was unprecedented. The old guards — PDP and APC were preping their campaign jingles on the usual rhetorics of humongous promises of unrealistic projects. But as the Youths (with yours sincerely in frontline) through various means including media call-outs brought in the third force personified in Peter Obi, the nation's sociopolitical ecosystem never remained the same.

President Muhammad Buhari recently, directed the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Godwin Emefiele to continue with his job as the Governor of CBN, after he, Emefiele, must have been seen to have somehow shown interest in the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary. He predicated his decision on the good performance of Emefiele because he used the Unorthodox Monetary Policy approach which according to Buhari, has resulted in a better growth or performance of the economy.

Poet Laureate, Prof. Niyi Osundare’s latest intervention best captures the mood of the moment. Aptly touted “Incompetence weds Corruption”, the first and the last statements fascinate me most. The first says: “Pepeiye nigba ti oo m’owe/Ki lo be lu’odo se?” Translated, it is a pointed question to the Duck, wondering why, when it knew it could not swim, it still jumped into the river. The Duck here is the president, retired Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, and the river is Nigeria and its state of affairs.

I never knew it was an interview; I had thought it was one of those “reactions” that reporters seek from members of the audience or those they think can help them flesh up or throw some insights into a story line they are pursuing – and I have done this on a couple of occasions for The Guardian reporter, Kehinde Olatunji. So I was pleasantly surprised when the last outing turned out as a full-blown interview on the very important topic of the agitation for a Yoruba nation. Titled “Our agitation is for a restructured Nigeria, not Yoruba President, says Bolawole” and published in the Tuesday, 31st January, 2023 edition of The Guardian newspaper at page 14, I felt that the views I expressed in the interview should also be shared with my readers.
