That was the fated date when the Late Igbo warlord, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, used his power as the Governor of Eastern region, to make a counter pronouncement to the creation of 12 states by then Head of State — General Yakubu Gowon, and declared Eastern Nigeria "Independent State of Biafra."
